I too agonized over this question, without seeing a definitive answer.
But I bought a 387 finally, this week, and now know the truth.
For general screen refreshes, moving windows, etc, I don't notice a big
change. But for some games, for gs, idraw, and doc, the difference
is immense: they are now usable.

Date: 7 Dec 1992 18:38:32 -0600
This afternoon I just killed my system. I have my root file
system installed on /dev/hda2 and had just installed LILO 7. I rebooted
and it got as far as where it should mount the drive. At this point
the drive light stayed on for a bit, and then that was all. I tried
booting off another disk, in case it was LILO, but that did the same.
I got out my SLS boot/root combo and tried to mount it manually and
same thing. Please, if anyone knows how to counter this, please let
me know so I don't have to redo it all. BTW, I am using extfs.

Subject: any1 find that networking is still volatile????

Reply-To: mal11@po.CWRU.Edu (Matthew A. Lewis)
i have the SMC Elite 16 ethernet card with Linux SLS 0.98.5
distribution. i am very interested in discussing the
following topics with anyone interested.
1) I recompiled the kernel with all the patches in /usr/src/patches.
These are linux.tar,nfs.diffs,ramvga.cdif,tc98pl5-p[1-4].
I also changed linux/socket.h to sys/socket.h in
/usr/include/netinet/in.h. This WAS NOT mentioned in
/usr/src/linux/README, but was mentioned in /etc/inet/README.tcpip.
Is it still necessary to make this change???????
Someone should probably clarify this in the distribution.
The kernel was then recompiled without scsi or math emulation.
2) After reboot, all daemons are run. Telnetd, ftpd, named, inetd,
and mountd all work. Fingerd doesnt work. Telnet works great
for every machine except NEXT workstation. Foreign host
disconnects with 1st letter at login: prompt. Telnetd refuses
to let console on NEXT to logonto Linux machine. Mount appears
to partially work. NEXT user is able to mount my root dir
on his machine. unfortunately, I am unable to mount anything
on my machine. Error involves RPC rejection.
3) Most annoying thing seems to be that after using ftp, calls
to the nameserver here on campus are no longer made. Sometimes
it appears that named has just died. Other times it will
only let you logonto certain machines. Other machines
will just timeout when a network command is issued.
4) what the hell are mem recv start and end in
/usr/src/linux/net/tcp/Space.c??????
How should they be configured???????
5) Ftp gave me an wd8003 tranmit timed out error
today during a local ftp session.
6) before applying the NFS patches in /usr/src/patches,
ping gave REALLY nasty unrecoverable kernel panics.
Now it appears to be ok.
Again, I would love to describe these troubles to anyone
interested in bettering the networking code.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. I have just installed Linux 097 and now have a very basic unix
like
system that as yet does nothing. I have just read over a few letters
in
this conference and am impressed with the development that I see.
I wonder if someone could point me in a few directions.
I need to be able to get a good comm program that will run in Linux.
So
far I have no means of communications while in Linux. Along with the
comm package I need to know of where I can turn for other applications
and utilities that run under Linux (ie, C compiler, DTP, spreadsheet
and
so on). Are there UUCP modules written in later versions of Linux? I
guess I should really come up to snuff and get the most recent version
of Linux as well.

How different are mac disks (formatwise) really? FDFORMAT for MSDOG can
format and read 400k and 800k floppies, as well as 1.72 MB HD floppies.
Theoretically, linux should be able to do the same, with probably a great
deal more eligance than FDFORMAT/DOS. Now understanding the macintosh
file system might be a bit more tricky ... :)

I recently downloaded the alpha QIC-80 driver from tsx-11. I had no

Is there a mailing list I should read? My linux system has become far

sys-admin to be afraid of not making backups. Any info would be
appreciated.

I have a TSR for DOS that will let you read/write Mac Disks...
I have no Mac 400 or 800K disks.. but I think it will let you read
them with this TSR..
I also know that the NeXT floppy drives (which are very similar to
PC drives, if not identical) can also read MAc disks.. as well as DOS...

After firing up X the mouse pointer doesn't move. I guess
it has to do with my settings in the Xconfig, but after trying
for quite some time I gave up and decided to turn to comp.os.linux.
Could somebody using a MS InPort mouse when running X pls send
me all his settings for the Xconfig file concerning the mouse.
I've tried /dev/mouse as well as /dev/bmousems,
but I'm not sure whether busmouse and inport mouse are the same ....
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO ?
BTW: Only when I set the jumper to configure the mouse as
"secondary inport" I can use with MS Windows. Maybe that's part
of my problem.
I'm using SLS 0.98p5.
Thx very much,

This is your problem. Those are old libs which aren't compatible with the
ones you received with SLS. The correct version of the 8514 server is on
tsx-11.mit.edu, in the directory /pub/linux/packages/X11/X8514, under the
name x8514new.T.Z. That one is linked with the current libraries and worked
with SLS just fine. (I'm using it with an ATI Ultra Pro.)
Good luck!

twas simple enuff.
If you want remote finger requests to your machine to return
more than blank lines, either copy finger to /usr/local/bin
where fingerd is looking for it.....or recompile fingerd
so that it looks for it in /usr/bin.
Also, the man page for fingerd is not working.
Those of you with SLS might want to kindly do this:
mv /usr/man/cat8/fingerd.8.Z /usr/man/cat8/fingerd.8
now.....onto name server problems
